about

Friday 11 December 2020
Two weeks ago London was in a mild version of lockdown. The main road outside was quiet, many shops were closed. That came to an end on 2 December. Now, and for the past few days, all of London’s roads seem to be at a standstill, traffic tailing back as far as the eye can see, choked with long lines of motionless idling cars, vans, lorries. This congestion reflects a widespread mental congestion – too much is too much!
With their incompetence on Covid19, our leaders have been shamelessly fouling the space in which we all have to try and survive, using the pandemic as an opportunity to enrich themselves and their friends (who mostly lack any public health knowledge or experience), making the UK the European country with the highest number of excess deaths.*
As if that wasn’t enough, with just over two weeks to go the country is finally waking up to what Brexit will actually, concretely, mean for us: an indefinite sentence of movement and work constrained, shortages, rising prices, economic disaster, erosion of rights and standards; a physical, cultural and mental confinement that will last far beyond this pandemic. We are blocked in a dangerous, foul and polluting jam, going nowhere but unable to go back.
This was London’s mood when these pieces of music were made; regardless of my intentions, it is present here, like the permanent queue outside my window.
